Milled White Oak Bending Stock
Milled White Oak Bending Stock
*6/14/21: Due to the high volume of orders coupled with processing stock once per week to keep the wood shipped as green as possible, please anticipate 2-3 weeks for orders to be filled. Thanks for your patience. -Josh
In addition to our bending oak lumber, I'm offering milled White Oak rib stock for Cape Falcon Kayak and Canoe builders. The ribs are milled from freshly sawn clear, quarter and rift sawn Wisconsin White Oak. It is sold by the linear foot, at the max length of the longest stock you’ll need, and at your model’s specific length, width, and thickness. We throw in a few 'less than perfect' ribs with each order so you can practice steam bending.
To order kayak or canoe ribs, in addition to your order here send us an email with the number of ribs you want, plus the length, width, and thickness shown in the plans. See examples below. Also, due to the variability in weight and size for each order, shipping will be calculated and charged after the order has been placed.
The ribs will be shipped to you taped tightly together and wrapped in plastic. When you receive them, unwrap the plastic to prevent mold and store in a cool place to prevent moisture loss, but don't untape them until ready to use. Please feel free to call or email if this isn’t making sense. Lastly, 1% of every lumber sale gets donated to the Conservation Fund.
A couple examples:
If you are building Brian’s F1 kayak you’ll need 20 ribs at 2.5 feet long. This equals 50 lineal feet of bending stock, and Brian recommends ordering 10 more than you need, which is another 25 feet. So for 75 linear feet, the total cost would be $93.75 plus shipping. If you want to order more for an extra "safety margin" that's up to you.
Rib length and quantity varies widely on Cape Falcon canoes and detailed estimating instructions can be found in the plans, but just as an example, a large pack or small solo canoe might have 27 ribs at 4’ 4” which equals roughly 90 lineal feet, and Brian strongly recommends you order half as many for test ribs and mistakes, which would be an additional 45 lineal feet. So total cost on this would be $168.75 plus shipping.
